The second stage of the Tour of Chongming Island has, as expected, ended in a mass sprint. Jeanne Korevaar finished within the top 10. The victory in China was for the Belgian Jolien D’Hoore.
The WM3 Pro Cycling riders were sufficiently recovered on Saturday for the 2nd stage (135 kilometres) following a crash in the 1st stage. On Friday, Valentina Scandolara, Rotem Gafinovitz and Yara Kastelijn fell early in the race. “Rotem was most bothered by the fall”, says DS Jeroen Blijlevens.
Luckily for the trio, the race on Saturday was fairly well structured, with only one break-away worth mentioning, namely from Maryna Shauchenka. She got caught well before the final after which the peloton prepared itself for a mass sprint. There was no room for escapes in the final part of the race.
WM3 Pro Cycling tried to get involved in the sprint and Jeanne Korevaar was able to grab the 10th place. Lauren Kitchen crossed the finish line as 19th. “We proved no match for Jolien D’Hoore. It’s a pity but not a disgrace”, according to Blijlevens.
The Chinese stage race closes on Sunday with a 111 kilometres race. It is expected to also result in a mass sprint.
