Valentina Scandolara could in the last instance not conclude on the surprise in the third and final stage of the Tour de Chongming Island. Our Italian rider jumped from the peloton in the final and only got caught in the last kilometre. Jolien D’Hoore sprinted to victory and won the overall ranking as well.
The cycling fans expected a mass sprint in the final stage of the Chinese stage race, but the WM3 Pro Cycling riders refused to settle for this scenario. As the finish line approached, several WM3 riders saw an opportunity to break away. “As we would not make it in the sprint, we wanted to impress in another way and possibly surprise”, says DS Jeroen Blijlevens.
This eventually did not work out. It proved to be too tough in the wide streets of Chongming to stay upfront. Jolien D’Hoore was, as Saturday, the fastest in the sprint and bested Kirsten Wild who finished as 2nd. The Belgian won the overall classification in China. Lauren Kitchen and Jeanne Korevaar are the best placed WM3 riders in the final ranking (+27 seconds).
