A good performance by WaowDeals Pro Cycling in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Sabrina Stultiens finished in 6th place in this classic. The team is going home with mixed feelings though. Both Jeanne Korevaar and Marianne Vos crashed in a descent shortly before the Roche-Aux-Faucons, with Marianne being the main victim.
Soon after the starting gun the first adventurers took off. A group of 3 got a lead of more than a minute which quickly decreased after WaowDeals-riders, amongst others, set the pace on the Côte de la Vecquée. The escapees got caught right after the summit of that first climb.
The riders' legs were tested again on La Redoute. Five of the six WaowDeals-riders were well positioned at the front of the peloton. Several riders were dropped due to the high pace. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot attacked and got some space from the group behind.
The race opened entirely on the Roche-Aux-Faucons, the penultimate climb. Anna van der Breggen, Megan Guarnier, Ashleig Moolman and Annemiek van Vleuten made the jump to Prevot who was then left behind, giving them an advantage of 20 seconds at the top.
Six chasers, including Sabrina Stultiens, connected right when Amanda Spratt decided to attack. The Australian quickly collected a nice lead. Van der Breggen jumped on the Côte de Saint-Nicolas and dropped Spratt at one kilometre from the finish line, making the Dutch the winner.
Crash
"We were very well positioned with 5 riders on La Redoute, the place where the final started. We were racing strong and had a plan to take some initiative there. There was a crash shortly after and, all of a sudden, the world looks entirely different. It is now important to take stock of the damage which, at this stage, is not yet known", says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
Jeroen Blijlevens is pleased with the performance of the riders. "Sabrina was good, but just not good enough to get on the podium. Also Dani Rowe and Pauliena Rooijakkers were well placed. The best in the race eventually won."
Update
Jeanne Korevaar did only suffer minor damage after the crash. Marianne Vos, on the other hand, has a fracture in her collar bone. It is not clear at this stage how long she will be out of the running.
