Waowdeals Pro Cycling obtained quite some confidence in the Flèche Wallonne. Sabrina Stultiens and Jeanne Korevaar ascended the second and final climb of the Mur de Huy with the favourites. Sabrina was extremely strong on the Ardennes climb and eventually took the seventh place.
In the first part of the race, Doris Schweizer took off by herself. Four riders decided to counter-attack. With the Côte d’Ereffe in sight, the lead visibly decreased. The gap was closed right before the summit of the Côte de Cherave and the game could start again.
Pauline Ferrand Prevot’s team, amongst others, took the initiative. Thanks to the French rider, a leading group of 14 riders was formed after the first climb of the Côte de Cherave which thinned out to 4 riders after the Mur de Huy: Janneke Ensing, Megan Guarnier, Amanda Spratt and Pauline Ferrand Prevot.
It was uncertain for some time whether or not the chasing group with Jeanne Korevaar and Sabrina Stultiens could reel in the quartet, which they did due to an enormous effort. Sabrina crossed the finish line 22 seconds behind the winner Anna van der Breggen. Jeanne (29th) was 46 seconds behind.
“We had asked Jeanne to keep Sabrina at the front which she has perfectly done. Sabrina made an extremely strong impression on the final climb of the Mur de Huy, trying to jump to Gillow and Spratt which only just did not work out”, says a happy sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
On to Liège-Bastogne-Liège
The next UCI Women’s WorldTour-race is on Sunday: Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Jeroen Blijlevens is looking forward to it. “Jeanne has been racing strong the entire season and Sabrina demonstrated today what a huge progress she has made. Also Marianne Vos and Dani Rowe (who just got back from the Commonwealth Games with a bronze medal, red.) will be present again in Liège-Bastogne-Liège.”
