A strong performance from WaowDeals Pro Cycling in the Amstel Gold Race. Riejanne Markus takes 4th place in the Dutch classic and wins the prize for most aggressive rider. She was in the lead with 7 other riders for nearly half of the race. Marianne Vos sprinted in a chasing group to the 10th place.
The peloton took it quite easy for a long period of time in the rolling hills of Limburg. The race came alive with the Keutenberg in sight. On this famous hill, Riejanne Markus jumped, together with Chantal Blaak, Amanda Spratt, Lucinda Brand, Lotta Pauliina Lepistö, Audrey Cordon Ragot, Giorgia Bronzini and Alexis Ryan.
“We had agreed to be collectively at the front on the Keutenberg. Easier said than done as everyone wants this. The battle was already on 30 kilometres ahead of the Keutenberg; successfully as all our riders were positioned where they were supposed to be”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
Riejanne tried to get away in the last of 3 final laps by accelerating on the Bemelerberg. “You have got to have some luck as well. Riejanne was good which makes it difficult to stay calm”, according to Jeroen Blijlevens who saw that our rider from North-Holland was reeled back in soon after.
Happy with the progress
The leading group broke apart in the final climb with Blaak, Brand and Spratt getting away. The former had 1.5 kilometres further ahead in Vilt the fastest legs. Riejanne crossed the finish line some seconds later as 4th. Marianne Vos sprinted in the chasing group and finished 10th.
Also Pauliena Rooijakkers, Sabrina Stultiens, Jeanne Korevaar and Anouska Koster completed their race in this group. “I can only be happy with the progress that this group is making”, says Jeroen Blijlevens. “All our riders, without exception, have performed strongly and contributed to this fine result.”
