WaowDeals Pro Cycling brings a strong block to the start of the 7th edition of Gent-Wevelgem. Sports director Jeroen Blijlevens calls for this Belgian classic upon the following riders: Monique van de Ree, Jeanne Korevaar, Anouska Koster, Riejanne Markus, Marianne Vos and Sabrina Stultiens.
This UCI Women’s World Tour-race (143 kilometres) has traditionally some hefty climbs in the province of West-Flanders, being the Monteberg, Baneberg and Kemmelberg. These three climbs need to be covered two times each, bringing the riders from Ypres to Wevelgem.
“Gent-Wevelgem is a classic which captures the imagination, with the Kemmelberg being the best known climb. The passage on the Kemmel might be a decisive moment where the peloton could break into pieces”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. “Also the wind often has an influence on the outcome in Gent-Wevelgem.”
Sabrina in, Dani out
Jeroen Blijlevens included Sabrina Stultiens in the selection. It will be her first road race for WaowDeals Pro Cycling in Europe this season. On the flip side, the team misses Dani Rowe who is preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Australia where she will perform on the road and track on behalf of Wales.
“The Commonwealth Games are fairly unknown in our region, but for the Commonwealth countries, this tournament is nearly as important as the Olympic Games”, says Jeroen Blijlevens. “We wish Dani on behalf of the team every bit of success and we hope she’ll get nice results.” Normally, she will be available again for WaowDeals Pro Cycling during Luik-Bastenaken-Luik.
