Driedaagse Bruges - De Panne: breakaway Monique stranded in the last 5 kilometres

For a while, it looked like Monique van de Ree was going to compete for the victory in the Driedaagse Bruges-De Panne. In the last 5 kilometres, she and her co-escapees got caught and the Belgian classic ended in a mass sprint. Jolien D'Hoore had the fastest legs while Jeanne Korevaar pushed her wheel as 8th across the finish line.

The first edition of the Driedaagse Bruges-De Panne, which became part of the UCI Women's WorldTour programme straightaway, was a nervous one. Already nearby the first cobbled sector of the day, after 12 kilometres in Zuienkerke, the peloton broke in parts, forming a leading group of originally 15 riders. WaowDeals Pro Cycling was attentive and had Jeanne Korevaar and Monique van de Ree in the group.

The lead to the first chasing group increased to almost 2 minutes. A setback for WaowDeals Pro Cycling when Jeanne had to let go of the leading group after mechanical problems. As Majerus was also dropped, there were 13 riders at the front at 55 kilometres from the finish, while the pace by the followers was increased.

At the start of the 2 local laps (twice well over 15 kilometres), the gap was decreased to a minimum.  The leading group got smaller when a few riders misjudged the slippery tram rails and crashed.  Monique could avoid it and entered the nervous windy final with 7 others.

A sprint afterall
In the final lap, the difference fluctuated around half a minute. Kroger accelerated at 12 kilometres from the finish line. Monique tried to close the gap, but to no avail. The small group got caught in the last 5 kilometres and soon after, also Kroger's attack was neutralised. D'Hoore eventually sprinted to victory.
