A mass sprint was taken into consideration and that is how the Drentse 8 van Westerveld was concluded. Jeanne Korevaar sprinted to a place in the top 10 on Friday noon. Alexis Ryan took the highest podium spot.
“The first 45 kilometres were pretty flat, but the 2 climbs of the VAMberg were rough. The peloton broke into pieces”, says DS Jeroen Blijlevens. He noticed how the peloton slowed down and riders could make the connection again.
There were plenty of breakaways, such as from Nicole Steigenga and Malgorzata Jasinska. However, all escapees got caught well in advance of the finish line in Dwingeloo. A mass sprint with a peloton of around 60 riders had to bring the outcome.
“We had decided beforehand to pull Jeanne Korevaar’s card in case of a sprint. Unfortunately, we missed Dani Rowe as an important force at the front. She crashed 30 kilometres from the finish line and had to change bikes.”
Sick
WaowDeals Pro Cycling eventually started with 4 riders. Rotem Gafinovitz was feeling too sick on Friday morning to start in the first of 2 races in Drenthe. On Sunday, the riders await the Ronde van Drenthe, part of the UCI Women’s World Tour.
