CCC-Liv picked up the pace again in the OVO Energy Women’s Tour on Thursday after an unfortunate day. Pauliena Rooijakkers and Riejanne Markus, the two remaining riders for CCC-Liv, had a great fourth stage. Riejanne finished thirteenth, at 18 seconds from stage winner Kasia Niewiadoma. Pauliena was shortly behind. Riejanne is now fifteenth in the general classification (+ 38 seconds).
“I jumped with each breakaway at the start of the stage hoping to be part of it. I was ahead for a little while, but I was not in the three-headed lead group that was formed. After that I focused on the challenging final, with a local lap of 12.5 kilometres and a tough uphill finish”, says Riejanne.
“The race opened on the local lap. Pauliena and I were well positioned. I tried to jump away twice in the last lap, but I couldn't get the space, at one point because I had Elisa Longo Borghini in my wheel who was ranked too close in the general classification. After that, I kept quiet for the final climb in the last 6 kilometres. I was in good shape and I am happy with the 13th place.”
Pauliena stayed a bit more in the background in the fourth stage. “A deliberate choice”, she says. “It was a long stage. I mainly waited for the final lap when I tried to jump once, but I got closed in. The climbs were too short for me today. They will be longer tomorrow which suits me much better.”
