CCC-Liv puts up a good fight in Strade Bianche

CCC-Liv has once again raced amazingly, this time in the Strade Bianche. The team was always attentive at the front on the decisive sections and several of our orange jerseys attacked in the WorldTour classic. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio finished in sixth place, 51 seconds from winner Annemiek van Vleuten. Marianne Vos finished right behind her.

Sports director Jeroen Blijlevens saw that the race had a fast start. Several riders were dropped in the back. Agnieszka Skalniak did everything possible to reconnect, but the pace was unfortunately slightly too fast for our Polish.

On the fifth unpaved section of the day (9.5 kilometres long), after 68 kilometres of racing, fifty riders broke away from the rest, including five from CCC-Liv. Here as well, none of the riders slowed down resulting in a split of the group. Shortly after this section, a group of about forty riders regrouped, still including the five from CCC-Liv.

In an intermediate part without any gravel, twelve riders chose the attack. Pauliena Rooijakkers and Riejanne Markus kept the focus and represented CCC-Liv. The group was reeled back in after ten kilometres and a maximum of 20 seconds. Jeanne Korevaar then tried with five co-escapees, but they did not get the blessing either from the chasing peloton.

“The race exploded in the final. Marianne Vos and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio were very strong, but not powerful enough to keep Annemiek van Vleuten from the victory. Van Vleuten is the rightful winner”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.

“We put up a good fight. We were collectively strong and did what we had to do. Marianne and Ashleigh were well positioned in the final and Jeanne was also very attentive all day long”, says Jeroen Blijlevens. “In this kind of final, with such a challenging finish in Siena, you can improvise any tactic, but only the strongest riders survive.”
