The chances of success for CCC-Liv in the Tour of Flanders seemed very great for a long time. A flat tire of Marianne Vos deep in the final, after the Oude Kwaremont, threw a spanner in the works. The victory in Oudenaarde was ultimately for Marta Bastianelli after a sprint in an exciting final.
“We expected that there would be some hard racing after the Taaienberg and we realised we had to be well positioned there. It was our intention to attack after the Taaienberg and to bring Marianne Vos to the final as fresh as possible”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens about his team tactics.
“The team has properly executed the tasks. We were in an excellent position in the race and I have seen Evy Kuijpers, amongst others, constantly doing very good work. Unfortunately, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio had some bad luck on the Taaienberg and her role was finished then and there, but the rest of the team was well positioned resulting in Marianne Vos and Jeanne Korevaar ending up in the final”, according to Blijlevens.
“Marianne Vos was in the front on the Oude Kwaremont. Unfortunately she was dropped due to a flat tire at a crucial moment in the race. This misfortune caused the end for us. A pity, because she looked strong. We can now wonder: what if she hadn't had a puncture? But ‘what if’s’ don’t count. I can only compliment the riders for the way they have raced.”
