CCC-Liv has taken a sixth place with Jeanne Korevaar in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the first classic of the season. The team raced strongly. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio was at the front for a long time, but, like the competition, had to bow their head to Chantal Blaak who soloed to victory in Ninove.
The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (more than 122 kilometres) had a continuous high pace with the necessary attacks. In the beginning the race was neutralised because the women were about to overtake the men. They had left slightly earlier than the women in the centre of Ghent.
The many attacks and accelerations made a real difference on the Muur van Geraardsbergen. A group broke away, including Ashleigh Moolman Pasio. Chantal Blaak then escaped and saw her victory no more in danger, despite attempts by the chasing group to undo the attack.
Sports director Jeroen Blijlevens: “Ashleigh has raced very well. She jumped a lot with breakaway attempts and she was positioned well when the difference was made on the Muur van Geraardsbergen. The riders who escaped, were the best in race. Blaak was too strong for the rest today. Even after a frantic attempt on the Bosberg to close the gap, she stayed ahead.”
Other CCC-Liv riders did a great job as well, according to Jeroen Blijlevens. “Jeanne Korevaar was in good shape today, but she was right behind a fall just before the Wolvenberg. She had to fight back. She finished seventh last year; this time she took a nice sixth place in the sprint for the podium places”, he continues.
“I am pleased with what I have seen today. The team did what it had to do. At important moments our riders were in the front. This gives a good feeling for the rest of the season.”
