Ashleigh Moolman Pasio has pulled it off. After Thursday's less successful time trial, she won the national championship on Saturday in South Africa. Our rider finished solo in Pretoria, after having dropped an early escapee in the final (Juanita Venter).
“Juanita Venter was strong. I was worried for a while as the gap between us did not seem to get any smaller. I therefore decided not to wait until the last lap and tried to make a move earlier”, says Ashleigh, who noticed during the race that many competitors’ eyes were focused on her.
“Fortunately, I made it through and landed this victory”, Ashleigh says, who got to wear the national jersey four times before. “It did not happen anymore after 2015. And after the time trial of Thursday, which was not optimal, my chances seemed less than great. I finally managed again to get this prize. It still is a special title.”
Ashleigh stepped immediately on the place after the road race on Saturday. She is travelling to Girona (Spain) where CCC-Liv has been staying for a training camp since Saturday.
