In the World Cup cross in Hoogerheide, the general rehearsal for the World Championships cyclo-cross (next weekend in Denmark), Marianne Vos took the third place on Sunday. Lucinda Brand took over the initiative in the second half of the cross and raced to victory on the muddy course at the Brabantse Wal.
Prior to the final edition for the World Cup, the classification did not hold any tension any longer as Marianne had already secured the World Cup jersey last week. Our multiple World Champion cyclo-cross wanted to nevertheless show herself on home soil. She furiously came out of the starting blocks.
“It was a real ‘mudfest’”, Marianne reacted afterwards. “I was good, but I noticed that I did not have the power to follow Lucinda Brand when she opened all registers. I raced at my own pace and towards the end I noticed progress. A third place was the highest possible today.”
Marianne is looking forward to the World Championship in Bogense with confidence. “I'm in good shape. Next week I will take some rest and then I must be ready. The competition is big, however, as everyone has seen again today. I would think that Lucinda Brand is a big favourite for next week.”
Weekend of extremes
Inge van der Heijden had a weekend of extremes. On Saturday she raced convincingly to the victory in Rucphen, but on Sunday she did not play any significant role in Hoogerheide. “I clearly had an off-day today. It simply did not work as it should have. Just as well it happened here rather than next week in Denmark.”
