In the third stage (104 kilometres) of the Giro Rosa, with arrival in Piedicavallo, Marianne Vos had again the target locked. She jumped at the very last moment past Lucy Kennedy, who had escaped in the last three kilometres. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio came in fourth and completed a great day for CCC-Liv.
“Prior to the start, we did a recon with Ashleigh Moolman Pasio and Marianne Vos of the last 25 kilometres of the stage. It was a similar tough finish as Saturday, with a sloping final and cobblestones on the very last stretch. We knew she could handle this”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
“The intention was that we would not take immediate initiative. The task of the team was mainly to keep Ashleigh and Marianne in front as well as possible and to start the final fresh which was succeeded well.”
The third stage could have been less successful, because Marianne had a flat tire at 10 kilometres from the finish. “There was a blasting fast bike change. In the meantime, the team waited in the back of the peloton for Marianne to quickly guide her forward again. That went smoothly.”
Marianne still wears the points jersey after the third stage. She and Ashleigh are both firmly in the top ten of the general classification. “Our performance has been perfect and we hope to carry this on”, said Jeroen Blijlevens. “Tomorrow awaits us a stage for true sprinters.”
