On Sunday, the competition calendar marks yet another important classic, namely Gent-Wevelgem. CCC-Liv sends a strong team to the starting line in Ypres (West Flanders): Jeanne Korevaar, Evy Kuijpers, Valerie Demey, Marta Lach, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio and Marianne Vos.
The race (UCI Women's WorldTour) includes the unpaved Plugstreets and the famous Kemmelberg. “The middle part in particular is very selective. But towards the end it gets flatter again. This would make Gent-Wevelgem a classic for the sprinters, as they say. This was indeed the case in previous years, because the chasing group often reconnected after the harder middle part”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
“We don't necessarily count on a sprint. And we don’t particularly need this. With Ashleigh Moolman Pasio and Jeanne Korevaar, we have riders who can sit in a group and can be successful in that way. If it does come together again in the final, Marianne Vos may still be able to make a move in a sprint. Regardless of how it unfolds, the competition will be strong.”
