Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio tried to shake off her false start of the Boels Ladies Tour in the first stage on Wednesday. Our South African champion attacked with less than 30 kilometres of racing. She collected a lead of up to 50 seconds, but was caught by the peloton with 10 kilometres to go; there were too many teams which were interested in a sprint. Lorena Wiebes sprinted to the victory. Ashleigh's efforts have brought her the mountain and sprint jersey.
Sports director Jeroen Blijlevens: “There were many open parts today where the peloton could fall apart, as well as some wooded areas giving riders the possibility to reconnect. Ashleigh wanted to show today that she is in good shape and therefore chose the attack. Unfortunately, she did not receive immediate support in her escape attempt in which case, the chance of a successful outcome would have been greater.”
