The brave efforts of Marta Lach in the final kilometres of the first stage of the GP Elsy Jacobs have been rewarded on Saturday afternoon. Our Polish rider beat her two remaining co-escapees at the second acceleration, 300 metres from the finish, and consequently grabbed the amazing stage win.
The peloton stayed together for quite a long time in the rainy stage, but they did attack on the local circuit. After an escape from Elena Pironne, five riders countered, including Marta. Of those six adventurers, three remained in the final phase: Marta, Banks and Koch.
“We had agreed to keep Riejanne Markus, the number three in the prologue on Friday, well ahead with a view to the general classification. If groups were to get away, we had to go with them. Marta Lach has taken up that assignment well”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
“It is good to be positioned at the front, because then you can create your own opportunities. Marta looked strong and did a lot of work in the leading group. That can be risky with the strong fellow escapees, but Marta completed it well. She tried it the first time and still had enough power left to place another attack.”
