Marianne Vos proved on Friday to be in shape. She won the first stage (126 kilometres) of the Tour de l’Ardèche, after having dropped Tatiana Guderzo one and a half kilometres from the finish line in Aubenas. Marianne is also the first leader in the general classification. The French stage race will last six days.
After 41 kilometres, there was a 14-kilometre-long climb of first category, making the peloton shatter and resulting in a group of around 25 riders. In addition to Marianne Vos, Jeanne Korevaar was also represented in this strong company. After Guderzo jumped away, Marianne counterattacked after the last intermediate sprint. She caught up with the Italian and dropped her on a sloping stretch, one and a half kilometres from the finish.
“This is incredibly strong from Marianne. She has just completed a seventeen-day high altitude training and went straight from Livigno to the Ardèche. It’s amazing that she shows this immediately in the first stage. We can also be very proud of the performance of Jeanne Korevaar. She could easily follow when the peloton broke and looked strong.”
On Saturday, the queen stage of the Tour de l’Ardèche is on the programme, with an uphill finish.
