Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio tried to outwit her competitors with a late breakaway on Sunday in the final stage (Nijmegen-Arnhem) of the Boels Ladies Tour. However, the peloton did not allow it in the technical final and reconnected with our South African shortly before the finish line. The Italian Chiara Consonni won the stage. CCC-Liv finished second in the team classification.
“We wanted to go for a victory in the last stage. But we also realised that our chances would not be very high. We expected a sprint and a lot of control from the team of the classification leader. If there were any escapes, we absolutely wanted to be part of it”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
“There were a few real attack attempts in the end, but we were always alert as a team. When the peloton thinned out, there were still five CCC-Liv riders at the front. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio placed a nice jump in the final kilometres. We hoped that the favourites behind them would hesitate and look at each other. Unfortunately, Ashleigh was caught 2.5 kilometres from the finish line.”
