The Ronde van Drenthe on Sunday did not bring CCC-Liv the result that was hoped for in advance. Evy Kuijpers and Marianne Vos were present in the final, but were unable to get a high ranking after a stormy day in Drenthe. Marianne finished eleventh after Marta Bastianelli who won the race.
Cold, rain, wind and hail made the second WorldTour race of the season a challenging ordeal. After the first climb of the VAMberg, CCC-Liv was well positioned with Riejanne Markus, Jeanne Korevaar and Marianne Vos when a group of forty broke away. Our three riders were riding well and showed themselves at the front.
In a stressful part with four cobblestone sections, the pace in the group decreased somewhat and a group with Evy Kuijpers and Marta Lach managed to reconnect. That company, however, did not stay together for a long time. Many riders were dropped shortly before the second climb of the VAMberg, including Jeanne, Riejanne and Marta, partly due to the cold circumstances.
Evy and Marianne were still in the final for CCC-Liv, but the two orange jerseys had unfortunately already spent a lot of power in the first part. Marta Bastianelli eventually had the fastest legs; she outsprinted Chantal Blaak and Ellen van Dijk with whom she was in the front in the final kilometres.
“We can make a thousand and one excuses, but it just didn't work out today. That's a pity, because we had hoped for more in advance. Especially after the strong Strade Bianche, where we raced with pretty much the same team”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. “We must quickly forget this race and prepare for the next one.”
