After the amazing victory of Marianne Vos in the Trophy Alfredo Binda last Sunday, the next victory was not within reach in the Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne. Marianne Vos was tenth in the bunch sprint; fellow compatriot Kirsten Wild took the victory.
The pace was pretty high in the fourth WorldTour race of the season. Riders tried to break away on the not very selective course on the West Flanders’ coastside, but the peloton did not allow that. As a result, the race was concluded in a mass sprint, as many experts had predicted beforehand. It did not, however, deliver the desired result for CCC-Liv.
“The team has done a lot of work. We were well positioned in the front at the moments in the final where things might have gone wrong. In the final kilometres, Evy Kuijpers reacted well to accelerations”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. “Marianne Vos was still in the front in the last corner. She missed her ‘cat-like’ style in the sprint and did not come loose from the group”, sports director Jeroen Blijlevens observed.
