The 28th Giro Rosa has made a start. WM3 Pro Cycling obtained a 6th place in the 11.5 kilometre long team time trial (Aquileia-Grado). Boels-Dolmans clearly proved to be the strongest in the opening stage. The team won in a time of 14 minutes and 47 seconds. WM3 Pro Cycling added 37 seconds (15 minutes and 24 seconds). The difference with the number two, Sunweb, was 21 seconds.
“We have ridden a decent team time trial and performed in line with our possibilities. Boels-Dolmans was clearly the strongest in the race”, says DS Jeroen Blijlevens. “It certainly was not an easy stage: 9 kilometres straight ahead, continuously with headwind and towards the end, a couple of turns.”
The riders are awaiting a tough stage (122.5 kilometres) on Saturday from Zoppola to Montereale Valcellina. The devil is especially in the final. The run-up of well over 90 kilometres is flat, followed by a climb (2nd category) of 5.2 kilometres. The average gradient is 8%. After the summit, another 24 kilometres bring the riders to the finish line. Jeroen Blijlevens: “Perhaps the race is allowing itself to try something.”
