The riders of CCC-Liv have shown themselves several times in the fifth stage to Lake Cancano. Pauliena Rooijakkers initiated an attack at 30 kilometres from the finish line and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (seventh in the result) was positioned at the front all day. However, it was not enough to challenge Annemiek van Vleuten. The Dutch took both the stage victory and the leader's jersey.
“The race was already hard early in the stage. There were attacks by Pauliena Rooijakkers and Marianne Vos on the first climb, as we had agreed. We wanted to make the stage hard today from the start. That worked quite well, because the peloton was being torn apart. However, it fell quiet and riders could reconnect”, says sports director Jeroen Blijlevens.
“Pauliena Rooijakkers then tried it in a counterattack and led the stage with two others. A remarkable, brave attempt. The three were unfortunately caught”, says Jeroen Blijlevens. “Annemiek van Vleuten was out of everybody’s league today. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio did what she could.”
Ashleigh has now moved up to third place in the general classification. Our South African has Annemiek van Vleuten (+ 3.05) and Kasia Niewiadoma (+ 49 seconds) ahead of her. After today, Marianne Vos will again be riding in the familiar orange of CCC-Liv, as she has handed over the points and mountain jersey to Van Vleuten.
