Kasia Niewiadoma sustained some damage in the battle for the much desired pink jersey in the 2nd stage of the Giro Rosa. Our Polish rider lost nearly two minutes (1.54) to stage winner Annemiek van Vleuten. Anna van der Breggen finished 2nd and starts in pink on Sunday.
The tipping point in the 2nd stage was at the end of the 122 kilometres long stage from Zoppola to Mantereale Valcellina. The peloton had to overcome a climb of 2nd category at around 25 kilometres from the finish line. The steep and narrow mountain road caused a lot of damage and thinned out the peloton to around 30 riders with the most important names.
At one kilometre from the summit, Annemiek van Vleuten, Anna van der Breggen and Italian Elisa Longo Borghini got away, building up a lead in the descent. In the final part of the 2nd stage, the teams in the chasing group tried to minimise the gap, but to no avail. The leading trio, all strong time riders, were able to stay upfront. Kasia crossed the finish line as the first of the chasing group.
“We had hoped to be in the small group of 3. Kasia did everything to make the jump, but clearly, that was not sufficient today”, says DS Jeroen Blijlevens after the race. “The Giro Rosa has only just started, many things can still happen. We have to reflect now how we can respond.” The riders await a flat stage on Sunday.
